Mario Party 8
Usually my family and my tastes differentiate on anything and everything, so much that we usually never agree on anything; especially video games. Though, there is one game that my sister and I love to play with relatively good intentions: Mario Party 8 for Nintendo Wii.
Inside the game are boards that up to four players can play on (if less than four players are available, then computer A.I. players can be substituted). Players can choose from 12 different characters to play (from a total of 14 after other characters have been unlocked) along with their level of play and handicap. Once players are on a board they compete to complete the goal of the game: collect as many stars as possible in the time limit.
Stars are won though mini games played or can be bought for various coin amounts and/or won by reaching a certain space on the board. Mini games can be played several different ways: a four way “every player for themselves,” 1 vs. 3, 2 vs. 2, duels and more. Coins and other rewards are awarded at the end of the game such as players that landed on the most blue or green spaces, player with most coins, player who spent the most money, etc. and some stars are awarded then.
After games are played you are awarded Carnival Cards that allows you to go to the Fun Bazaar and buy unlockable items such as mini games, playable characters, items and more.
You can also go to another section of the “carnival” (that the game is themed on) and just play the mini games with other players or by yourself. (To play the mini games you must have had played the games through the boards and “discovered” the game. Otherwise grayed out question marks appear in the name’s place.)
Fun isn’t this game’s middle name if you are playing as a single player. The fun of out doing your friends isn’t there because the A.I. players seem to have better than average luck and always seem to win… Four human players are recommended to keep the game fair and interesting. (A computer player doesn’t seem to respond when you tell it that you just “pwned” it versus that of a human counterpart.)
Mario Party 8 is a good game to sit back and have a good time with you friends and family. It is also a great way to beat up on them without actually doing it…
