Looks can be deceiving, as every night in front of thousands
of people Marc Roberts appears blue but in truth his feelings are totally
opposite of those associated with the color. As a member of the Blue Man Group,
Roberts beams with fiery excitement and aims to spread the joy all across the
country. There is no place Roberts would rather be than on stage entertaining
crowds with the indescribable happenings of a Blue Man Group show.
On March 20th
at the Nutter Center, Roberts’ joy will be masked by
blue paint as part of the How To Be a Megastar Tour 2.1.
“It’s an experience where you have to see it to believe it,”
Roberts said of the multimedia performances that is full of color and hits on
all the senses and emotion. The music is percussion based and produced in a
number of creative ways, such as with PVC piping. The fourth wall is broken
during the show as there is a high amount of audience participation, and not
just for those who are called on stage. Everyone in attendance receives the
same training on how to be a rock star. Though someone will have their purse
personally gone through by one of the Blue Men and a traditional act involving
marshmallows always wows the audience and produces a memorable souvenir. “We
never know what we’re going to do, except not talk,” Roberts said, as the Blue
Men never utter a word but speak volumes with their body language and
instrumental music. There is a narrator who leads the evening and vocalists in
the band. Despite the silence of the Blue Men there is no shortage of sound
during a performance.
Through all the hysteria it’s difficult for Roberts to
maintain a straight face as the amount of improvisation used and audience
participation brings some unexpected moments. “It can be hard not to laugh
while performing these ridiculous gags,” he said.
Before each show, depending on Robert’s level of motivation
it takes thirty minutes to an hour for the basic blue latex paint to be
applied. It’s not his favorite part but well worth it and has become a part of
who he is. “I don’t own much of anything without some blue paint on it, it gets
everywhere.”
Every night Roberts still gets a huge rush of adrenaline
when he first appears on stage and the dream is realized of his awesome job.
Though the time spent performing brings Roberts much joy, he
takes the most pleasure in interacting with the fans at the Meet-n-Greet
sessions after the show. While the Blue Men remain mute they sign autographs
with a mark of blue paint and are available for pictures. “People want to hug,
get a high-five or just touch you. They want that physical contact because we
just went through something. The connection that people feel is amazing to me,”
Roberts said. The fans of the Blue Man Group are very devoted and loyal, made
evident by the message board at www.bluemanlibrary.com
where thoughts are shared on the different performances and all aspects of the
group.
With his identity kept hidden, Roberts is able to enjoy the
perks of fame while also remaining anonymous while in public. He is able to
witness acts of natural admiration that a lot of entertainers don’t get to see.
Roberts recalled meeting with a woman out by the bus who had been crying from
excitement, she had gifts for the Blue Men and talked of how much they meant to
her. She thought Roberts was just part of the stage crew, he didn’t tell her
any different and promised to deliver the presents.
After previously being part of the nightly show at the
Venetian in Las Vegas,
Roberts is now on the country wide tour. There are lots of laughs shared on the
tour bus as they travel from city to city, but Roberts still misses his puppy, Franklin, who Roberts leaves
at home. While at every destination Roberts arrests the attention of the
audience members with his performance which fits his original college major of
Criminal Justice. His plans changed though after seeing the Blue Man Group
perform. “I knew that’s what I had to be,” Roberts said, who changed his major
to Theater Performance.
For nearly three years Roberts endured a rigorous audition
process which began with thousands at an open casting call and eventually ended
up in the final two. “I was so excited when I got it I called my mom and told
her I would get her a refrigerator. It’s not easy to tell your parents you want
to be a Blue Man so I’ve tried to give back to them all I can for their
support,” Roberts said.
As part of a musical family, Roberts’ parents turned to the
drums as an outlet for his energy to be released. It was never imagined that
the hours of pounding they heard would lead to such positive results. “They
wanted me to have something to keep my hands busy and they hoped it would pay
off eventually,” he said.
Now Robert’s
energy is spent entertaining thousands of fans and nobody ever leaves feeling
blue. The Blue Man Group invades the Nutter
Center on March 20th
at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the Box Office and through Ticketmaster.
“Come ready to rock,” Roberts said.
