A strong voice in
the African-American community, particularly through his films, Spike Lee will
bring his message and speak at the University
of Dayton’s Diversity
Lecture Series on February 18th.
“We are thrilled to have Spike Lee,” Lynnette Heard,
executive director of the University
of Dayton’s president,
said. The campus has been filled with excitement since his appearance was
confirmed.
The Emmy Award
winning and Academy Award nominated Lee, is a world known director, producer,
writer and actor for films dealing with controversial social and political
issues. He has revolutionized the role of black talent in cinema, regarded as
today’s premiere African-American filmmaker; Lee is a forerunner in the
do-it-yourself school of independent film.
The Diversity
Lecture series is part of a larger strategic plan to increase inclusion and
diversity on campus and prepare students, faculty, staff and the Dayton community for
success in global society.
“It has grown from
the University Presidents desire to improve race relations and bridge the
communities together,” Heard said.
The title of Lee’s
lecture is ‘The World Through My Lens’ and is sure to be a captivating
discussion. Never one to shy away from controversy Lee most recently spoke out
against the governments delayed reaction to New Orleans after Hurricane
Katrina, chronicled in his miniseries ‘When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four
Acts.’
Many students from
Dayton agree
with Lee’s claims after being there to help in the recovery and are anxious to
share the stories with him.
Heard see’s a
great benefit in someone of Lee’s status to have a presence at the University
and get to know the feel of Dayton.
The event will be
held on February 18th, 7:30 p.m. at the Schuster Center,
One West Second Street in partnership with the Victoria Theater Association.
Tickets are $15 or $20. Call 937-228-3630 or 937-229-2545 for information.
