Blackberry Patchwork
Color your World with Creativity By Alisha McDaniel
This is what Phyllis Meiring of Blackberry Patchwork, Ltd. set out to do when she opened her quilting shop in Piqua.
“I believe creativity restores balance, encourages harmony, mends hearts, expresses love and frees one for soulful expression,” Phyllis stated.
But she hasn’t always been in the creativity business. Phyllis went to school for communications and was even a pastor for a time. She has taught at universities, worked in a library, been a bus driver and was even a DJ for a time.
“I believe that every experience prepares you for a future experience,” Phyllis said. “My life’s experiences have equipped me to be in this place at this time here at Blackberry Patchworks. I wanted to own my own business. I thought, if I’m gonna be a work-a-holic, I’d rather it be on my terms,” she explained about what drove her to open up her own shop.
Blackberry, which has been in operation for about four and a half years, stocks two-thousand bolts of fabric, including homespun and wool, as well as three dozen patterns to create everything from wall hangings to decorative flowers to full-size quilts. Not only that, but Phyllis also teaches classes and hosts workshops on quilting, punch needle, painting and just about anything else her customers express interest in. She says she’s not just running a quilt shop; Blackberry is a “creativity supplier,” she said.
But that’s still not all that decks the walls and lines the shelves at Blackberry Patchworks. It also specializes in country gifts, many of which Phyllis has designed and created herself. Wooden houses, crocheted coasters, penny rugs, antique decorations, painted baskets and country dolls are just a few of what you can find inside. Just about everything in the store you can purchase right from the display or request a pattern to make it yourself. If she doesn’t have a pattern, it’s very likely that she will create one for you.
Blackberry also offers special-order custom and memory quilts that have been sent to places as far as Korea, Japan and Australia as well as Pennsylvania, Florida, and right here in the Miami County.
She is currently working on building a fully-functional website and online store where customers will be able to find all of the quilting notions they will ever need.
Furthermore, she has a plan for the future. One day she plans to move out to the country and have a shop out there. A “large, creative place” where both buyers and sellers of creative concepts can “build a Blackberry village” together. But for now, visit Blackberry Patchworks in downtown Piqua at 408 N. Main St. or check out the website at www.blackberrypatchworks.com to check out the quilting fabrics, services, supplies and country gifts.
