Frontier Shop Destination For Outdoors People
Store owner and Tipp City resident Mara Back said all walks of life can be found at a rendezvous, which can last a weekend or as long as two weeks.
“When you’re around a campfire at a rendezvous, you never know who you might be sitting next to. They could be a heart surgeon, an attorney, a factory worker or a dentist,” she said. “It’s a class of people that are down to earth; friendly and honest.”
National rendezvous come in all historical periods from 1700 to 1840, including the Rogers Ranger period, the Revolutionary War, War of 1812 and Colonial times. They take place in five regions in the country and are attended by thousands of people each year.
Another lifestyle sought by Frontier Shop patrons is that of the cowboy period.
Instead of rendezvous, today’s cowboy participates in Cowboy Action Shoots.
In fact, the Frontier Store has its own cowboy outfit known as the Indian Creek Regulators, which is one of the most active and informative groups in the region.
For the cowboys, period clothing, revolvers, lever action rifles and ammunition can be found at the Frontier Shop, along with camping supplies, h‘olsters and a wide range of accessories.
The Indian Creek Regulators club holds interesting, informative meetings every third Thursday of the month and is invited by community organizations to put on scenarios that involve marksmanship, trick roping and trick shooting, along with the kinship and camping found at rendezvous gatherings.
The Frontier Store carries items from 1700 to 1898, along with how-to books on almost every relevant subject imaginable and hunting supplies for the black powder seasons.
Mara started the shop with her husband Ernie after he became involved with making leather goods, which often times included holsters and knife sheaths in the frontier style.
In 1980, creating these items became more than a hobby for Ernie and Mara, after their children got in high school.
From that point on, people from all over the United States have made special trips to Tipp City to discover the Frontier Store.
Mara said many of her customers are re-enactors, teachers, history buffs and hunters, along with a wide assortment of cowboys, Native Americans and people interested in discovering a new lifestyle in the halls of history.
The Frontier Store is a place where people can begin their journey back in time and acts as a general store for those already involved.
“For anyone interested in participating in a weekend or big national rendezvous, don’t get intimidated by the amount of money or items needed or having the best camp. Come in and let’s talk about it. There are basics to start with. Enjoy yourself and then build for the next year,” Back said.
For cowboys and hunters, the Frontier Store also offers minor gunsmithing, restoration, site work, cleaning, etc.
If you are interested in learning more about rendezvous, action shoots or other related events, or if you’re ready to begin your trip through time, the Frontier Store is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
