Christmas at Biltmore Estates
The fact that Biltmore Estates is the largest privately owned home in the United States is enough to cause flocks of people to visit Western North Carolina each year.
However, when you add dozens of Christmas trees, more than 400 wreaths, 700 poinsettias, thousands of ornaments and miles of evergreen garland, the 250 room mansion becomes even more glorious.
Located in Asheville, (about seven or eight hours from Dayton via highway) Biltmore Estates sits valiantly in the midst of the Blue Ridge Mountains, surrounded by thousands of acres of woods, gardens, ponds, self-sustaining farmland and a world-renowned winery, not to mention connected to a wonderfully historic city.
In the spring and fall, Biltmore focuses on the massive garden display as well as the surrounding forests foliage, along with tours of the mansion and winery.
In November and December Christmas at Biltmore Estates is the highlight of the year and includes tours of the home, both during the day and by candlelight at night, along with fine dining opportunities, shopping and all Asheville has to offer.
During Christmas at Biltmore Estates, classical Christmas music stream through the corridors of the mansion helping to enhance the holiday spirit.
Within the mansion, you’ll find how the richest of the rich lived at the turn of the 20th century.
The home, which contains a Billiard Room, Palm Court, a massive Banquet Hall, a Music Room, Tapestry Gallery, a library with 20,000 unique volumes, Louis XVI Bedroom and much more, was completed in 1895 by George W. Vanderbilt on 125,000 acres he purchased after visiting the area.
In 1930, 16 years after Vanderbilt’s death, his family opened the house and gardens to the public. It has since been a world destination for travelers.
While touring the home, you’ll discover everything in place just how it was in the early 20th century.
The home was one of the first to have full-scale plumbing and electricity and is built to appear like the Chenonceaus and Blois located in the Loire Valley of France.
Vanderbilt traveled the world purchasing furnishings for the home, which includes priceless items such as a chess board owned by Napoleon Bonaparte, tapestries from throughout Europe and many other unique finds.
Each room has a different theme and is decorated accordingly.
Christmas at Biltmore Estates can be enjoyed at two levels. If you visiting in the daytime, you’ll enjoy the holiday tour of the home and winery and be able to dine in a historic restaurant on the grounds.
Another option is the Candlelight Christmas Evenings, which is not offered on November 21, 23 or December 24, 25, but available every other evening starting at 5:30 p.m.
The Candlelight Christmas Evenings has visitors touring the home in the warm glow of candle and fire light. Also during the evening, choirs and musicians perform holiday favorites.
Tickets for either tour are $44 for adults and $22 for ages 10-16. Children nine and under are admitted free with a paying parent or guardian.
