The Paintball Capital of the World
After running through dense forests, climbing castle walls and dodging hundreds of paintballs traveling at 190 mph, I was beginning to feel pain and exhaustion.
Looking down at my arms, I could see that I would be bruised up for days, especially after getting into close-range fire with my opponents at a field known as The Alamo.
I had been playing for eight hours straight at the number-one paintball course in the world, which is located near Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania.
The course, which is actually made up of 50 different fields, is known as Skirmish USA and is more than 700 acres large.
On a Thursday morning and afternoon, more than 100 people had come to fight it out in the Pocono Mountains.
I had come across Skirmish USA several years ago while searching paintball courses on the Internet. It was a place I knew I’d eventually get to, even though I’m not what you consider a regular paintball player.
The people I was playing against, however, were mainly experts. One guy was even on his college paintball team at Penn State. He’s the one that hit me in the arm and rear and left me in pain for several days.
Paintball is not for the meek.
In fact, the game takes courage, endurance and skill, all of which I seemed to be lacking as I took the field for the first game.
We started in a patch of woods that was two football fields wide; 50 against 50. My first instinct was to try and survive the game, but I soon found out if you try to hide and live—you die.
Within minutes of the first game, I found myself, and some 10-year-old kid, surrounded by eight of the other team’s players. Needless to say we got pelted.
From that game on, I was on the move, running with the experts. (Really, I was about 15 feet behind them.)
Fields at Skirmish USA are named appropriately. The Alamo had each team fighting in desperate situations, while the Tippmann Castle, which is three-stories high, has one team defending the castle’s flag while the other team charges in. The refs on the field made this game even more interesting by throwing smoke bombs on the course. I actually survived that game and took out several opponents. When it was my team’s turn to storm the castle I was dead in less than two minutes.
Skirmish USA is open seven days a week and is known far and wide for its giant battles. One battle includes 3,000 people reenacting the Battle of Normandy.
For the average player, Skirmish USA is mind-boggling and extremely fun.
The price is right, too. For an entire 10-hour day of play it only costs $28. This includes gun rental, camo overalls and a mask. The price increases when you buy “paint.” 500 paintballs will cost you about $40, while 1,000 cost $68.
Another great thing about Skirmish is its location. The complex is located eight miles south of Intestate 80 and is accessible from Miami County almost entirely by highway.
If you’ve ever dreamed of playing the best paintball of your life (there were men, women and people of all ages) then Skirmish is a dream come true. Check them out on the web at www.skirmish.com.
