Craig Ferguson 10 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 2
Unfortunately my life at times seems like the lead-in to a really bad joke, such as on Saturday, October 6 when my girlfriend and first true love broke up with me. It’s been discovered by research that laughter is a cure for most any ailment so I was in luck due to having plans to cover Craig Ferguson’s appearance at the Palace Theater in Columbus, which was sure to provide a healthy dose.

Upon arrival, my need for medical attention was raised as my pair of tickets had not been reserved so I had to purchase them. Take my girl, that’s one thing, but then take my money too and there better be some shock paddles nearby, or at least a really funny comedian.

The role of doctor was given to Ferguson, best known as the host of the Late, Late Show on CBS and for his role on the Drew Carey Show as Nigel Wick.

Originally from Glasgow, Scotland the comedian has found success in America where he now proudly considers home and finds humorous observations. “American’s go to the dentist a lot. Every five or six months they have to have their teeth whitened,” he said, when I spoke to him on the phone a few days before the show.

When he first arrived in this country he was impressed by the amount of food here after being told about gum. “It’s a food that you chew but don’t even swallow,” Ferguson said.

As host of the Late, Late Show, Ferguson feels blessed to hold such a position and relishes in its advantages. “I only have to sit behind a desk in a suit for an hour a day rather than eight,” he said.

There hasn’t been a particular guest that Ferguson has been most excited about meeting though he does control who is asked on. “It’s kind of like your kid’s, you don’t favor one over another but love them all. And if I don’t like them, I won’t have them on.”

Despite his love for the hosting duties, Ferguson also takes great passion in performing stand-up and tries to tour as often as time allows and be on stage somewhere every weekend. It’s still the essence of who he is.

“It’s nice, I can say whatever I want, can cuss a little and not worry about being censored by the networks,” Ferguson said.

Though success was found in comedy, Ferguson initially dreamed of finding fame as a musician. He was once a drummer for a punk band in Glasgow called The Bastards from Hell. Music is still a love of Ferguson’s and he possesses dreams of being a rock star but knows he is too old now.

I can’t imagine him creating any music to please an audience more than his comedy which provided a good punch-line for my disastrous day.
