To reach the audiences funny bone is the intention of every comedian, but for Charles Marshall the purpose runs deeper- he aims to touch their hearts with the love of Christ. With only a microphone as his pulpit, Marshall travels the country and ministers a positive message in a humorous manner.
“I believe that everyone has a ministry in them, mine is to make people laugh and encourage others to follow Jesus,” Marshall said.
As a Christian comedian, Marshall’s act doesn’t include a single biblical or church based joke but only material that is clean and faith motivated. He avoids any vulgar or obscene language as well as negative/insulting humor.
“As I travel across the United States, I find that most people love comedy but don’t want to have their ears burned with all the vulgarity,” Marshall said.
Each year Marshall travels over 100,000 miles a year performing at hundreds of churches and corporate events effectively communicating the joy found in a relationship with the Lord.
While growing up, Marshall wavered between being painfully shy and the center of attention. “There were times my parents were called to the school because I couldn’t stop talking, I still can’t stop but now I get paid for it,” he said.
Twenty years ago, Marshall started doing comedy full time and has enjoyed a tremendous thrill ride ever since. He feels tremendously blessed for the wisdom that has been bestowed upon him. “It’s a privilege to do this job and is amazing to see what God has done.”
A personal highlight for Marshall was the release of his CD ‘Fully Animated’ including his most humorous bits, as well as ‘Shattering the Glass Slipper’ a self-help motivational book he authored. Marshall also just completed his first video, which will be released soon. After all the hard work that goes in to them it’s rewarding when they are made available to the public.
Marshall’s act is heavily based on observational humor and the events he witnesses. “The best material happens right in front of you, while in the grocery or anywhere. And a lot of it comes from when I’m just trying to express my opinion about things to people and they laugh so it must be funny,” he said.
A nationally syndicated Christian humor columnist, Marshall’s column appears in more than a dozen states and he is a contributing writer to Focus on the Family Magazine so his mind is always exploring for humorous ideas.
To keep his act fresh Marshall also continuously adds new material which is often tested on his wife and staff members. “My wife is my best audience,” he said.
Married for 19 years, Marshall has a three year old daughter and five year old son whom he misses while on the road. He tries to never be away from home for more than four days at a time.
The response he gets from audiences provides Marshall with a sense of family everywhere he goes as he really enjoys interacting with them. “I have the amazing opportunity to talk to the best people on the planet,” he said.
At times, being on stage seems surreal to Marshall from the exhilaration caused by the sounds of satisfaction from the crowd. “I love the hearing laughter, it’s much better than silence when they are supposed to be laughing.”
His career has already brought more fulfillment than ever imagined, but Marshall’s goals for the future include performing at the White House someday and losing five pounds.
Marshall will be performing February 29 at the Tipp City United Methodist Church, 8 West Main Street beginning at 7:00 p.m. with pre-show music at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 in advance and can be purchased at the church office or by calling 937-667-2318. “You can bring your baby and grandma for a 100% squeaky clean show that will have you rolling in the aisles with laughter,” Marshall said.
